Major search engines are very important source of website traffic. A search engine is a website that indexes web pages. These search engines run software programs called ‘spiders’ or ‘robots’ that continually crawl all over the internet in search of new web pages to index.

Search engine optimization is the process of achieving top rankings for a website’s most relevant search terms. The most relevant search terms are the ones people are going to type in when looking for things they want. These are the search terms that are necessary for high page rank.

Selecting the right keywords for each page of your website is the first step in search engine optimization process. In addition to that you must also optimize each page with the targeted keywords in the following places:

  • Title tag
  • META keyword tags
  • META description
  • Heading tags
  • ALT tags
  • Image names
  • Hyperlinks
  • Body text

Title Tags

You must place your primary keyword phrases within your web page’s title tags (<title> </title>). Do not place anything else with in the title tags.

META keyword

The META keyword tag contains a list of all the keyword phrases separated by a comma. The primary keyword should be first followed by the rest.

META Description

The META description tag contains a description of your site. This description will be visible in some search engines when your site is returned in a search.

Heading Tags

Some search engines give relevance to content place in the heading tags. Top priority is placed on the highest listed heading tag. Your keyword phrases should be used as the heading for sections within you web page. All these heading should be followed by some descriptive text.

ALT  Tags

An image Alt tags follows your graphic address in your html code. These words will be displayed instead of the graphics if the graphics are turned off.


Image Names

Name your images using your primary keywords.


Hyperlinks

<A HREF> tags are used to create links on your web pages. You can place your primary keywords in the page name and the description text that are used in the hyperlinks.


Body Text

Web page should be content rich. All the web pages should contain your keywords used in different variations.
